Chess website accounts are available to the Chess community, which includes participants at Berkeley and affiliated universities, the personnel of sponsor companies, and individuals collaborating with specific workgroups. For details, see Who can get a login?. Accounts are simply a means for providing you with an "identity" on the server so you can participate in the discussion groups and so on.
Select a user name and enter your real name and email address. The user name must contain no spaces or non-alphanumeric characters, except period (.) and underscore (_).

Your first name (and middle, etc. if desired)
Optional Suffix (Ph.D., Jr., etc.)
Your full email address, which must be at your educational institution, and not a personal address like .gmail.com

You are being offered membership in the instructors group. Other groups are available, but you must meet certain requirements, see above. See also the Full Request Account Page.
Choose Member if you want to be on the email list for that group, Choose Guest otherwise. The group names are linked to the overview page of each group, in case you need to know more about the groups.
