Abstract
Typical scientific use cases for Kepler require complex workflows that are executed many times with varying input data and parameter settings and that generate many data products during each run. Kepler currently cannot effectively track these myriad workflow executions, nor does it effectively manage the products generated by them in a way that is accessible and understandable to scientific users. Thus, effectively capturing and reviewing the output of a scientific analysis is a daunting chore for Kepler users. We have designed new capabilities in Kepler to solve these issues: a Workflow Run Manager and a Report Designer. The workflow run management tool provides browsing and searching of provenance repositories and allows users to easily find, manage, and view previous workflow executions. It can also be used to export workflow execution results with full provenance information in order to exchange or publish the results with other scientists. The report design module provides effective visualization of workflow products - from input parameters to generated chart graphics - and lets workflow authors specify a simple report layout for displaying these pertinent items after execution. The initial design for this work targets a standalone report in PDF format that can be distributed outside of Kepler and that is also linked to the run manager to allow easy exploration of previous runs from within the Kepler user interface.
